Italy trip
I just got back from a 3-week trip to Italy. The food was pretty good, but finding healthy vegetarian options was sometimes a challenge. I did find 2 vegetarian restaurants during my travels: Mondo Bio in Sorrento and Il Vegetariano in Florence. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. The couple who runs Mondo Bio were extra warm & friendly and the food was really tasty and their selections were also organic. And Il Vegetariano was great too - a bit of a walk from the center of town, but well worth it - my hubby had a quiche and I had a risotto/rice dish which was very satisfying and a delicious brownie for dessert - the portions were a good size and I was happy to see the place was quite popular. We also had a small kitchen in our room at an agriturismo in Umbria and enjoyed doing some cooking - an omelette with steamed broccoli, garlic and cheese that had truffles in it was an excellent combo and pasta with lots of fresh veggies...some great Italian red wine - a young Brunello and a Montefalco Sagrantino were relaxing accompaniments to our meals. We also tried a "Super Tuscan" wine and a wine called Kerni (2007) which were too expensive for our budget to buy a bottle, but we completely enjoyed savoring a glass of each. The Kerni was interesting because it was a rather sweet red wine - really delicious! I also brought back some pasta made of farro (a type of grain) and am looking forward to trying it - will report back soon!...ooh, almost forgot to mention that I had a great gourmet meal at a restaurant in Venice called Ristoteca Oniga - you can order their vegetarian meal and it was hands down the best meal we had in Italy - delicious, unique appetizer plate followed by pumpkin lasagna - I highly recommend it!
